023: A Warrior’s Farewell

Vintage engraving of Marmion's defiance to Douglas. Marmion is an epic poem by Walter Scott about the Battle of Flodden (1513). The poem tells how Lord Marmion, a favourite of Henry VIII of England, lusts for Clara de Clare, a rich woman. He and his mistress, Constance De Beverley, forge a letter implicating Clara's fiance, Sir Ralph De Wilton, in treason. The London Illustrated News, 1882

Over the years, I have said farewell to a great number of warriors.  Some have died, and others retired or just moved on.  It is never easy, especially when they are not ready to go.  In this episode, I read a farewell speech I wrote for one such man.  It is short and sweet, and it touches on the restlessness that many veterans feel when they leave the service.
